3 Toxic Workplace Habits You Need to Ditch
3 Toxic Workplace Habits You Need to Ditch Youâve dished it out before, and youâve taken it. âWell, good morning. Nice of you to finally join us!â âHeâs always taking long lunches.â âWish I could leave at 4:30 every daymust be nice!â âIs he ever at his desk?â âSure must be great to work from home every Friday.â âSeems like she uses all her sick days to go shopping.â âOh, sheâs home with a sick kidagain. I need to get myself a kid.â Do any of these phrases sound familiar? We call this âSludge.â Sludge is the term we use during Results-Only Work Environment (ROWE) training for the workplace chatter that reinforces this idea: people canât be trusted with complete autonomy. Sludge can be mean-spirited gossip or even friendly banter. We Sludge for many reasons, but at the end of the day itâs meant to either directly or indirectly shame a coworker for not approaching work the way itâs âsupposedâ to be approached. Sludge is a powerful force in maintaining the status quo and implies that work only happens at the office between the hours of 9am and 5pm. It follows the formula Results = Time + Physical Presence. We say Results = Results. Period. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} People can be getting results anywhere, at any time. This tendency to Sludge everyone around us reinforces the idea that anyone who operates outside of the prescribed norms is either goofing off or taking advantage of the system. In a ROWE, every employee has equal parts autonomy and accountability; own your work and get it done like an adult. Itâs that simple. The dusty workplace of old may be slowly but surely losing its firm grip on us, but we still have some toxic tendencies that linger in the cube farmsbe they physical or virtual. Here are three things you can do to clean it out of your lives. Listen for Sludge At first, youll hear the obvious. Youll hear what seems to be an innocent comment from a coworker (How nice of you to join us today!) and youll recognize it as Sludge. Then youâll recognize yourself in what we call a Back Sludge conversation (as in, Sludging behind someoneâs back). This is the Sludge thatâs spewed about a co-worker who isnât within earshot: Pamela: âHow is Steve getting a promotion? Heâs never even here!â .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} Jim: âI know and when he is here, he takes long lunches and comes in late.â You: âAnd what about the jogs he takes after his long lunches on Tuesdays?! Thatâs getting ridiculous.â The longer and more intently you listen for Sludge, the more youll start to hear all of the subtle Sludge not only around you, but that youâre part of. Point it out: When you hear these toxic phrases pop up in conversation, politely point it out to the person saying it. Donât let yourself or someone else feel guilty or judged by an outdated standard. We live in an amazing time where many of us (one day, maybe ALL of us) can own our work and live by the results we achieve, not the desk-time we put in at the office. Stand up and rebel against the system, donât be a party to it. The accountant who has worked all night on a deadline shouldnât get shamed by their coworker for âcoming in lateâ and the mom who leaves the office at 3pm to attend her daughterâs ballet recital shouldnât be questioned by nosy cubicle neighbors about why sheâs leaving âearlyâ. An easy way to redirect the conversation when you hear Sludge is to say âIs there something you need?â For example, someone sees you leaving at 2pm and says â2:00? Where are you headed so early?â Your response: âIs there something you need?â Sludge is stopped dead in its tracks and the conversation is back to results. Or, Paul says to you âDid you see Allison come in a 10am again today?â Your response: âDid you need something from her?â Back Sludge averted. On to more important matters, like RESULTS. Donât Sludge to make yourself look good Sludge gives traditional office dwellers the chance to make themselves look like hard-working, valuable employees, regardless of how well theyâre actually performing. Donât be that guy who throws a coworker under the bus for being 15 minutes âlateâ or for not approaching work exactly like you do. Focus on results and if you need to make yourself look good, then own your work and get some damn good results for your customers and your company. Focus on what matters, for yourself and those around you. Working on a team without Sludge is liberating. Guilt evaporates. Productivity increases. Customers rave. Slay the Sludge and let results rise.

Individuals turned out to be progressively mindful of the negative effect of smoking on wellbeing. An ever increasing number of workers quit smoking. The representatives who had never smoked became progressively vocal about the smell of smoke and the possible negative impact of recycled smoke on wellbeing. Along these lines, businesses were confronted with an issue. In the beginning of representatives getting vocally negative about smoking, in numerous work environments more workers, esteemed representatives, smoked than not. Managers began by building appealing smoking territories for workers or assigning one room as a smokers relax. This fulfilled nobody as non-smokers for the most part felt like they expected to stroll through a haze of smoke to get the chance to work. This was on the grounds that businesses needed the smoking safe houses as near the activity as could be expected under the circumstances so workers set aside less effort for their smoke breaks. Representatives were likewise progressively vocal about the way that workers who smoke took a bigger number of breaks than non-smokers. Work environments turned out to be less and less agreeable to smoking representatives. Territories outside, away from entryways and passages turned into the assigned smoking zones, or representatives could smoke in their vehicles on carefully upheld breaks. Progressively however, representatives who smoke turned into a minority in numerous work environments. Businesses tired of implementing approaches about how a long way from a portal workers could smoke. Furthermore, state and nearby administrators chose representatives and clients reserved the privilege to clean air and without smoke organizations. For example, Michigan occupants and guests got shielded from presentation to recycled tobacco smoke in all cafés, bars, and organizations (counting inns and inns), because of Public Act 188 of 2009, Michigans Smoke-Free Air Law. Public Engagement and Academia Some Things to Consider for Manchester Early Career Researchers (ECRs) University of Manchester Careers Blog
Public Engagement and Academia â" Some Things to Consider for Manchester Early Career Researchers (ECRs) by Stephen Gordon* *completed PhD in 2013 and has held numerous postdoctoral positions and student support roles; worked as an Advisor in the University of Manchester Careers Service since 2016 The term âpublic engagementâ can seem like an anathema to some aspiring academics. As a medievalist â" and, it should be said, not the most extraverted of people â" my natural instinct is to find an out-of-the-way seat in an old, preferably historic library and surround myself with stacks of books. Thereâs nothing more satisfying than finding something new and exciting in a musty, half-forgotten manuscript. And yet in this increasingly interconnected â" and, dare I say it, âcommercialisedâ â" academic world, there is a definite pressure on researchers to demonstrate the public utility of their work. For newly-minted postdocs who are perhaps juggling two or three part-time jobs, spending time on âengagementâ activities leaves no time for research, writing, and job/funding applications, and can sometimes be seen as detrimental to attaining a full-time academic position. As read on the Times Higher Education Supplement a few years ago, the belief that public-focused projects can have a negative impact on oneâs career path is not a new argument. Paradoxically, job adverts are now insisting that applicants demonstrate their ability to disseminate their research to wider audiences. To use a Star Trek analogy, itâs like taking part in the Kobayashi Maru test; a no-win situation. Fear not, however, for there are certain things ECRSs can do to engage with the general public that doesnât involve completely overextending oneâs work/life/research balance. Blogs and Social Media The easiest method for disseminating your research to a wider audience is the creation of a social media account. Twitter is an especially useful platform. Whilst admittedly it can sometimes resemble Obi-Wan Kanobiâs description of Mos Eisley, there is no better tool to get your name (and, more importantly, your research) out there in the wider world. Flagrant self-promotion is the name of the game: have a nice photo of a primary source youâre working on? Published something recently? Attending a conference? Tweet it. Follow the relevant institutions, funding bodies, and movers and shakers in your field. Retweet subject-specific posts and comment on relevant links. Piggybacking on theme day hashtags (e.g. #folklorethursday) is a further way of getting your posts seen by a wider audience. For professional accounts itâs best not to engage with some of the more emotive political discussions that usually populate Twitter. This is especially true for ECRs â" contentious online ac tivity is a turn off for any potential recruiter. Another important method of dissemination is the creation of a professional blogsite, ideally linked to your Twitter account. WordPress and Squarespace are two of the most popular and widely-used examples of website-building software. Writing for public audiences requires a totally different skillset than writing for a PhD supervisor or conference attendees. Brevity and clarity of expression is paramount. Say in 500-1,000 words what would usually take 3,000-plus words in a conference paper. Intersperse your paragraphs with images to entice the reader. An ability to engage the sensibilities of non-specialists, to sell your work in a clear, easy-to-under-stand manner, is something that can really enhance an academic job application. Admittedly I havenât updated my own blog, Supernatural Histories, in a while, but itâs also important to get into the habit of making regular posts to build up a following. Who knows, one of your readers could be a potential future employer. Discover Day Workshops at the University of Manchester Discover Days are intended for A-Level students interested in applying to the University of Manchester and usually take place throughout the year. They incorporate talks, workshops, and question-and-answer sessions delivered by departmental staff and postgraduate students. Running a Discover Day workshop based on your research is a great opportunity to develop skills in curriculum design and project management, as well as working with different age groups. Of course, contact your department first to see if your services are required! Public Talks and Lectures Public lectures are a perfect opportunity to utilise the communication skills youâve accrued as a seminar leader and/or conference speaker. But where to start? Local history groups represent the most obvious arena for advertising your research beyond the confines of academia. For example, last year I gave a talk to a local archaeology society, the South Manchester Archaeology Research Team (SMART), on the topic of medieval death rituals. Wary of overloading the audience with subject-specific jargon (the bane of all conference papers) I actually found it quite liberating to simply talk about some of the more interesting aspects of my research â" medieval walking corpses! â" without being beholden to the occasionally tedious minutiae of academic presentations. As a cultural hub, Manchester is a city that has lot to offer. Consequently there may be opportunities to organise talks or workshops in association with local heritage partners. Although the deadline for the 2018 programme has passed, the annual Manchester Histories Festival is a prime example of the type of event that is always on the lookout for contributors. Of course, your engagement activity â" whether a lecture, walking tour, or a more labour-intensive pursuit such as a pop-up exhibition â" must accord with the aims and intentions of the event organisers. These are just some of the ways to consolidate your public engagement experiences. Itâs not an exhaustive list by any means, but a sample of the things to consider. The liminal stage between finishing a PhD and finding an academic position is admittedly a fraught one. Maintaining a balance between research, working, *and* consolidating the skills demanded by an increasingly public-facing role is tricky, but by no means impossible.
